The work aims to explore the distribution characteristics of microstructure and mechanical properties in TIG arc brazed joints of titanium-aluminum dissimilar alloys and analyze the feasibility and advantages of TIG arc brazing for joining these alloys. To achieve this, an optimized TIG arc brazing process with 5183 filler wire and alternating current (AC) was employed, which enabled the brazing of titanium-aluminum alloys with the minimum heat input. The microstructure of the brazed joints was analyzed through optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their mechanical properties were evaluated through microhardness and tensile tests. The joints meeting the NB/T 47013II level requirements were successfully produced by TIG arc brazing process. At the Ti/Al interface, a serrated intermetallic compound layer, approximately 1.6-3.4 μm thick, formed, predominantly composed of TiAl3 and AlTi3. The average tensile strength of the joint was 127 MPa, with fracture occurring in the heat affected zone on the aluminum alloy side. Overall, the intermetallic compound layer does not negatively affect the joint strength, and the average hardness of the weld is higher than that of the aluminum alloy base material and its heat affected zone. These findings demonstrate that TIG arc brazing is an effective method for joining titanium-aluminum dissimilar alloys, resulting in joints with favorable microstructure and mechanical properties. |
